Which material is superior in guitars: Cedar or Mahogany?
I am interesting in purchasing a guitar and was wondering what the difference in all the different woods are. I am currently comparing a guitar that is made of cedar with a guitar made from mahogany.
Cedar is used for the tops of guitars while mahogany is used for the back and sides. There are very few guitars with mahogany tops.
Condsidering tops, spruce or cedar are usually used. Cedar tends to have a darker tone but it responds much faster to fingerpicking than spruce does which is why most classical guitars have cedar. Cedar is also a weaker wood which is why you'll find very few steel stringed instruments with a cedar top.
The back and sides partially define the volume and tone of a guitar. Maple back and sides will be the loudest and brightest, followed by mahogany, then rosewood, considering only the most popular materials.
