Why does the sound fade in/out on my acoustic/electric guitar live?
Hello. I play music professionally and there's been an issue with my sound level from my acoustic guitar fading in & out during live shows. I'm playing a Taylor JKSM through L.R. Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. using the phantom power from the mixer to power the D.I. I've switched out all the cables and have a new battery in the guitar. I've also run other instruments through the same channel on the mixer without any problem, so it's not the mixer channel. A typical show lasts 3 hours, but the problem only occurs randomly about twice a night. The sound fades, sometimes to nothing, then bounces back and is fine for the next hour. Of course any time I try to recreate the set up at home, it never happens, just when I'm on stage. The guitar has an active pickup, but no volume or EQ controls. Anyone ever have to deal with this?
I am curious, does this happen at one specific venue or every place you are playing? It seems like you have tried everything else (cables, battery, etc.) The only time I have encountered a similar problem it ended up being a problem with the phantom power. For some reason, in certain venues, it would simply "wink out" for a moment and come back on. We were never sure if it was a power supply issue or what. Our solution was to simply not use the phantom power to power the D.I. and use batteries or a dedicated power supply instead. Try using a passive D.I instead or using a dedicated power supply for the Baggs.
