I really want to learn to play the banjo...?
I have no idea where to begin! I have never picked up a stringed instrument in my life. I know that I the first thing I need to do is to get a banjo... any tips on brands or 4 string vs. 5 string, from what I've read it seems like I'm leaning more towards a 5 string so I can play bluegrass. Also, I'm not sure what the best way to learn is... would you recommend taking lessons, or are there any good instructional dvd's for beginners that aren't too difficult to follow? thanks in advance for all answers, also feel free to add your thoughs/tips/advice on banjo playing.
Unless you live in a big city it will be difficult to find a banjo teacher. Banjo players are becoming scarce (unfortunately)
I don't play banjo but I taught myself guitar, and the biggest quality you'll need to tackle a stringed instrument is determination. Your fingertips will hurt like hell for a few months, and many will give up through frustration. Keep trying and even when you mess up and think it's impossible, pick the banjo back up.
I'd recommend a 5 string purely because you can play more. Ukulele players have great difficulty playing some songs because they have just 4 strings.
