What Are The Differences In Quality Between An Ephiphone Guitar And A Gibson?
I've always played Fender and Gretsch, but I just wanna try a Gibson. At first, I wanted the Gibson 1957 Black Beauty, but when I found out that it was over $3,000 I kind of didn't want it anymore. So then I did some research and found an Ephiphone Black Beauty for $900. I know Gibson and Ephiphone are almost the same thing, but will I really notice any difference playing an Ephiphone over a Gibson?
Last year, Guitar Player magazine compared a $5000 Gibson with it's $900 Epiphone counterpart. At the end, there was a difference, but not $4100 difference in the writer's opinion.
Epiphones are produced overseas, and that accounts for a lot of the cost reduction. One of the most expensive components in a a guitar is the paint and finish (mostly due to OSHA regulations on paint booths here in the US).
There are some other construction differences. Gibson Les Pauls are usually made with 2 pieces of mahagony glued together (called a pancake body) with a cap of maple on top to brighten it up a bit. Epiphones usually just have a one piece mahagony body.
Of course, the Epi's are as ornate as far as inlays, binding, and hardware is concerned. The pickups may or may not be US made, depending on the guitar (the artists signature guitars like the Iommi and Slash models do have US pickups).
Epiphones are an outstanding value. If you buy one, pay $50 to have it set up correctly. The set up out of the box leaves a bit to be desired.
Good luck.
