What drum set should I get?
I have the choice between two Pearl drums. They are both the Vision series, but one is birch and the other is maple.
Maple: 5 piece- snare, 2 toms, floor tom, bass
Terracotta finish, chrome hardware
Wood snare
Hardware included
$1300 CAD
Birch: 5 piece- snare, 2 toms, floor tom, bass
Ruby fade, black hardware
Stainless steel snare

I'm just a beginner and I'm wondering if I'm even looking at the right things. I was told that the maple was better wood quality but I don't like the colour. I like the birch one but I'm not sure about the steel snare. Which would be the better one for me to get?
yes, youre looking at the right things. first of all, the color should be an option. most sites will let you choose what color you want. i find it hard to believe that terracotta is the only finish available. but either way, i would suggest starting off with the birch kit. birch is not a bad wood! its simply different from maple, and it is cheaper to produce. if you want quality wood, stay away from poplar or basswood, those are the most common woods used in cheap kits. birch and maple are both top of the line. it just depends on what kind of sound youre looking for. i would say start with birch because its cheaper and youre a beginner. dont spend more money on something if youre not sure you'll like it. you might want to go to a guitar center and just bang around on them for awhile. an untrained ear might not even be able to tell the difference! as for the snare, both steel and wood are popular. its all personal preference when it comes to that. if you get the birch kit, then maybe 5 or 10 yaers down the road when youre ready to upgrade, if you still want maple by that point, you can go all out on a super nice maple kit
